Two True Loves
Jim Patton & Sherry Brokus
I Want It All
I want to have a wife and a family
A warm bed and a roof that don’t leak
A couple close friends and a case of beer
A clear conscience when I look in the mirror
And I want my child to grow up
Where nobody makes her crawl
They tell me that you can’t have everything
But I want it all
I want a job that I care about
A club nearby where we can Twist and Shout
And a few good songs on the radio
And someone to hold me when I feel alone
And I want my child to grow up
Where nobody makes her crawl
They tell me that you can’t have everything
But I want it all
A handful of people decide
What's best for all the rest
Every step up the ladder
They care about you less and less and less
And I want my child to grow up
Where nobody makes her crawl
Some guys will settle for anything
Some guys will settle for anything
Some guys will settle for anything
But I, yeah I-I-I want it all

Two True Loves
I’ve got two true loves
I’ve got two true loves
I’ve got two true loves
And only one of them is you
I stomped outside
Like I’d finally won the fight
Slammed the screen door behind me
Said I didn’t need you in my life
Went down to the bar
Looking for a couple of friends
Put a dollar in the jukebox
Drank myself oblivious by ten
I’ve got two true loves
I’ve got two true loves
I’ve got two true loves
And only one of them is you
Well I screamed and I cursed
And I swore I would never bend
It’s the same old argument
Again & again & again
You say: Why don’t you love me
Like you love your rock ‘n’ roll?
Why does everything we do
End up a struggle for your soul?
I’ve got two true loves
I’ve got two true loves
I’ve got two true loves
And only one of them is you
I got so much left to prove
You just don't understand
You have everything you wanted
Your house, your job, your man
You say: Why can't you take it easy
Watch a little TV?
Life doesn't have to be so hard
Don’t take it out on me
It was raining when I got home
I slipped and fell in the drive
I took a real good spill
Guess I’m lucky that I’m still alive
Lying there in the rain
I saw you shaking your head at the door
Lying there in the rain
I didn’t want to be lonely no more
I’ve got two true loves
I’ve got two true loves
I’ve got two true loves
And only one of them is you
I’ve got two true loves
I’ve got two true loves
I’ve got two true loves
And only one of them is you
But I got room enough for two
Two true loves

Nothing at All
Everybody I know’s been sayin’
They just can’t take this pain
They’re looking through their past
For a place to hide
And I guess they think they’re weathermen
Cause they’re always calling for rain
Keeping their true feelings locked inside
They’re making love to emptiness
And stumbling through the dark
Like there’s some perfect love they’ll meet
Along the way
But you never see things clearly
When you’ve got to look too hard
And you don’t know what you wanted anyway
And I know that it’s a hollow feeling
When that loneliness comes through
And they say if you fly too high
You’re bound to fall
So you try your best to open up
And that makes it hard to lose
But if you stay on the ground
You won’t see nothing at all
Sally’s on the street corner
She’s selling what she knows
And Jimmy’s in the shop from nine to five
And in her dreams she’s a dancer
Well that’s the way it goes
And at night he’s writing songs
To keep himself alive
And Sally says to Jimmy: Hey Honey
Love’s no answer anymore
And nothing’s ever quite the way it seems
And getting close to you is the mistake I made before
Ah, you know that life’s so different from your dreams
And I know that it’s a hollow feeling
When that loneliness comes through
And they say if you fly too high
You’re bound to fall
So you try your best to open up
And that makes it hard to lose
But if you stay on the ground
You won’t see nothing at all
Ah, Sally, can’t you see his tears
Before they’re on his face?
Can’t you see the night’s gone on too long?
Can’t you feel the melody
In words he can’t relate?
Can’t you reach his heart
Before it’s gone?
And I know that it’s a hollow feeling
When that loneliness comes through
And they say if you fly too high
You’re bound to fall
So you try your best to open up
And that makes it hard to lose
But if you stay on the ground
You won’t see nothing at all

Annabelle Lee
The night was bright with anticipation
As I gazed across the room
I was trying to look kinda casual
Don’t wanna make my move too soon
But everybody knew what I was looking for
Cause they were all looking too
I was trying to find a girl to understand me
When I found you
Oh Annabelle Lee
You look like a girl I used to know
I want to take you in the soft moonlight
And swear I'll never let you go
And though the promises are already broken
I want to dream about somebody new
Somewhere in the night
There lies an answer for me and for you
And I swear that's true
I had a girlfriend in my hippie days
She had just turned 17
She must’ve been impressed cause I’d dropped out of college
In my search for what life means
When she decided I was ordinary
She turned me upside down
She really messed my mind up good
But I guess I’m healing now
Oh Annabelle Lee
You look like a girl I used to know
I want to take you in the soft moonlight
And swear I'll never let you go
And though the promises are already broken
I want to dream about somebody new
Somewhere in the night
There lies an answer for me and for you
And I swear that's true
I met a woman the last time we played here
She must’ve thought I was gonna be a star
She latched onto me like an unemployment check
And we walked outside this bar
I started to feel a little bit queasy
When she said: “I knew someday you’d come along!”
I was glad I hadn’t had too much to drink
To know I’d stayed here way too long
Oh Annabelle Lee
You look like a girl I used to know
I want to take you in the soft moonlight
And swear I'll never let you go
And though the promises are already broken
I want to dream about somebody new
Somewhere in the night
There lies an answer for me and for you
And I swear that's true
I swear that it’s true
Almost swear that it’s true
For me and for you
And everyone else out there too
You know it ought to be true
For me and for you
I swear that it’s true

Leave Me Alone
Everybody’s been telling me
What they think I oughta do
Get off this train to nowhere
Stop acting like a fool
But I’ve been down that road before
Almost died inside that tomb
Get off my back
I’ve got no time to listen to you
You better leave me alone
Everybody’s been telling me
How they think I ought to live
Everybody’s angry
Saying things I can’t forgive
I have a wife who loves me
Responsibilities
But I still have these dreams exploding
Deep inside of me
You better leave me alone
Can’t you see that I don’t want to talk about it anymore?
Why don’t you just take it to somebody else?
I don’t need you anymore
Everybody’s got advice for me
But that don’t make it true
I could make their lives complete
If I’d just see their point of view
Now you’re saying to me
You’re disappointed through and through
I don’t know why I ever thought
I oughta change myself for you
You better leave me alone
Can’t you see that I don’t want to talk about it anymore?
Why don’t you just take it, take it to somebody else?
I don’t need you anymore
Leave me alone
Leave me alone
Leave me alone
Don’t want to be like you
Don’t want to be like you
And I’m not going to

Whatever Happened To Laurence Beall?
I was sitting here wondering the other night
Whatever happened to Laurence Beall?
He was a fine rock n roll musician
And a real cool guy as well
He drove a ‘60 Cadillac, convertible top
Man, did it sparkle and shine
Whatever happened to Laurence Beall?
He used to be a friend of mine
Whatever happened to Laurence Beall?
Did he finally give up or give in?
Is he still starting bands in some rock n roll hell?
Is he playing at the Holiday Inn?
He moved to Nashville to seek his fate
I haven’t heard from him since then
Whatever happened to Laurence Beall?
Do the girls still go wild over him?
Is he still writing songs from deep in his heart
Does his voice still ring honest and true?
Is he still off the wall or just playing a part?
Do his eyes still look straight into you?
Is he still trying hard to be somebody great?
Did he finally admit defeat?
Whatever happened to Laurence Beall?
If you see him, say hello from me
I was sitting here wondering the other night
Whatever happened to Laurence Beall?
He was a fine rock n roll musician
And a helluva guy as well
He moved to Nashville to seek his fate
I haven’t heard from him since then
Whatever happened to Laurence Beall?
Do the girls still go wild over him?
Whatever happened to Laurence Beall?
Is he still living reckless and free?
Whatever happened to Laurence Beall?
If you see him say hello from me
If you see him say hello from me
Hello Laurence

Why Did You Leave Me For Him?
First you told me he was just your friend
Some guy you knew from way back when
Pretty soon that act started wearing thin
Was he a flame rekindled? A new romance?
An accident? Or the best laid plans?
Oh baby, why did you leave me for him?
Was the moon too full? The stars too bright?
The sky ablaze with a brilliant light?
Was he your one true love or was it just a whim?
Did you drink too much? Did you think too little?
Did he play your heart like a Cajun fiddle?
Oh baby, why did you leave me for him?
Baby, why did you leave me for him?
Was it the words he spoke? Or his hands upon your skin?
Was he a better lover? A better friend?
Did he make your heart feel young again?
Oh baby, why did you leave me for him?
Was it the way he smiled? The way he kissed?
Did you just want something better than this?
What did he say to make you just give in?
Was it his steady job? His wad of cash?
The way he looked at me like I was trash?
Oh baby, why did you leave me for him?
Baby, why did you leave me for him?
Was it the words he spoke? Or his hands upon your skin?
Was he a better lover? A better friend?
Did he make your heart feel young again?
Oh baby, why did you leave me?
Oh baby, why did you leave me?
Oh baby, why did you leave me for him?

That Cup of Coffee We Never Had
When I think of you
I think of all those poems
Written just for you
In my room alone
I was seventeen
Watching from afar
Like I was your planet
And you were my star
I think of all those thoughts
Sometimes drove me mad
I think about that cup of coffee
We never had
When I think of you
I think of the day
You rescued me
From my old flame
I could not break away
And then you appeared
Took me by the arm
Said: “Let’s get out of here”
I think of guardian angels
When I needed one bad
I think about that cup of coffee
We never had
When I had the chance
I could not make it real
I kept the fantasy
And got the better deal
I think of you
Now and then we write
I ask about your daughter
You ask about my wife
I pour another cup
Remembering old times
Crack a little smile
Write another rhyme
All the same I wonder
Am I glad or sad?
Thinkin’ bout that cup of coffee
We never had
Thinkin’ bout that cup of coffee
We never had

She Doesn’t Want To See You Anymore
Somehow she didn’t fit your dream
Some scenes did not ring true
You took her love for granted
That’s an easy thing to do
Now when you call her on the phone
She’s never home to you
And she doesn’t want to see you anymore
You might have made a few mistakes
You’d make them all again
You laugh and proudly shrug it off
You say: “That’s just how I am”
But when you say she needs you
She’s changed a lot since then
And she doesn’t want to see you anymore
She’s probably thinking:
“I should’ve taken this short walk long ago”
She probably looked into your eyes
And saw someone she didn’t even know
Nothing ever hurt you like
The slamming of a door
When she doesn’t want to see you
She says she doesn’t want to see you
No, she doesn’t want to see you anymore

Caught In The Headlights
Like deer at night
Out on Hog Neck Road
We had nowhere to run
We had nowhere to go
We were caught
Caught in the headlights
We were caught
Caught in the headlights
Yeah the jig was up
We were paralyzed
A future once so bright
Flashed before our eyes
We were caught
Caught in the headlights
We were caught
Caught in the headlights
Frozen by self interest
Hypnotized by greed
Seduced by the siren call
Of what’s in it for me
Terrified and shaking
Frightened to our souls
Wondering how our lives had gone
So far out of control
What will we tell our folks?
What will we tell our kids?
How will we ever explain
The stupid things we did?
We were caught
Caught in the headlights
We were caught
Caught in the headlights
We were caught
Caught in the headlights
We were caught
Caught in the headlights

Local Yokels
Local yokels
At your local bar
Local yokels
Look how mean they are
They’re acting tough
And yeah, they’re actin’ cool
But a local yokel’s
Just a local fool
Local yokels
Local yokels
Wearing local shirts
Local yokels
Don’t care who they hurt
They’re pretty sure
There’s just one point of view
They don’t care about me
And they don’t care about you
Local yokels
They look at life as a conspiracy
The world is flat
As far as they can see
Local yokels
Everywhere I go
Local yokels
Think they’re ‘in the know’
If life’s a movie
They think they’re the stars
But they’re local yokels
In a local bar
Local yokels

What If You’re Fooling Me Now?
You tell me you’re sorry
You made a mistake
You swear it won’t happen again
You wish you could turn back
That part of the past
Or at least try to pretend
You sound so sincere
When you tell me we’ll make it somehow
But I look in your eyes
And I can’t help but think
What if you’re fooling me now?
You tell me you love me
That nothing has changed
You cry when I make love to you
You swear forever,
The rest of your life,
Just like when you told me “I do”
You look as intense
As you did at the altar
The first time you made me that vow
But I look in your eyes
And I can’t help but think
What if you’re fooling me now?
What if you’re fooling me?
What if your heart’s still untrue?
What if you’re fooling me?
You fooled me before, didn’t you?
I want to believe you
With all that my heart will allow
But I look in your eyes
And I can’t help but think
What if you’re fooling me now?
Your words are so sweet
I wish they could dispel all my doubt
But I look in your eyes
And I can’t help but think
What if you’re fooling me now?
I look in your eyes
And I can’t help but think
What if you’re fooling me now?

Hard Times
Old man McCartney finally died
Went to his grave unsatisfied
Gravedigger wishes he was under that hill
When he comes home to his stack of unpaid bills
You remember Frank who lived on Jennings Road?
Bank foreclosed, he ain’t got no home
These are hard times
New mother sneaks out in the middle of the night
Leaves her baby crying by the riverside
Night clerk says: “This town’s a joke!”
Takes the money from the register and goes for broke
Sirens screaming in the early morning rain
Times like these drive a man insane
These are hard times
Stockbroker driving his coupe de ville
Money’s rolling in to Capitol Hill
Everybody’s asking: “Which way to the top?”
Somebody always wants what somebody else has got
Some guy’s dressed up in red, white, and blue
He’s lying to me and he’s lying to you too
These are hard times

One More Song
Eddie pulls the van into the driveway
Waves to the kids and the wife
Hoping she’ll let him go down to the city
And catch Jamison’s show tonight
Man, if he doesn’t get there
There might be nobody there at all
What makes a man play music
With no one to hear but the walls?
But he started as Jamison’s drummer
So he knows why he carries on
Something inside that never quite died
And he’s always got one more song
There’s a handful of people already there
Most sitting at the bar
Jamison smiles when Eddie comes in
Then blows the next chord on guitar
They talk at the break, dissecting the past
And then they got a big laugh
A fan of their old band stopped by the table
Wanting both of their autographs
It’s a time they’ll always remember
Eddie knows why they carry on
Something inside that never quite died
And they’ve always got one more song
From CBGBs to the Bluebird
From the Bayou to the 8X10
Most nights they didn't make a dime
But they’d do it all again
Bartender says it’s ok to knock off
The owner won’t care anymore
But their fan’s still there with a table of friends
So Jamison plays a few more
He brings Eddie up for a couple of songs
They wrote when they were practically kids
Each one wondering about the other
And how he lived the life that he did
But Eddie already knows the answer
And he knows why they carry on
Something inside that never quite died
And they’ve always got one more song
They’ve always got one more song
